Galena
Galena is located in Kent County and was founded in 1763. Originally called Downs' Crossroads, after a local tavern that was located there, it was later called Georgetown Crossroads. In 1813, a small amount of silver was discovered near the town and there was a mining operation there for a short time. The town's name was changed to Galena , after the type of silver that was mined.
Local historic architecture in the area is a mixture. There are examples of Federal style homes of the late 1700's that were later embellished with Victorian features around the end of the 19th century. This was frequently done throughout Kent County, as a reflection of local prosperity of the owners. They apparently grew tired of the "old-fashioned" styles in favor of the Victorian style. The dwellings that currently exist whose original features remain tend to be those whose owners may not have had the means to update them, or they were tenanted.
Present day Galena is an active, thriving community. The local organizations sponsor events throughout the year. The Volunteer Fire Department hosts an all-you-can eat buffet breakfast monthly, and delicious ham and oyster dinners. Galena retains its original village atmosphere with many quaint shops along Main Street, and in the adjoining Dogwood Village Plaza.
There are antique and curio shops that offer a multitude of ever-changing treasures, The Galena Antique Center and Mrs. Janet's Attic are two favorites. While on Main Street be sure to stop by and visit Village Real Estate Company .
Galena is famous for the lovely dogwoods that line its streets, making the dogwood flower the town's symbol and a reason to celebrate with an annual spring festival. Galena's population has a high percentage of college graduates and many people who work from home, which enhances the quality of life. The town is close in proximity to deep water on the Sassafras River at Georgetown, Middletown, DE , and Chestertown, MD , MD. A sunny spring day in Galena, with the dogwood blossoms in bloom and a light breeze will entice a person to want to be a part of this lovely community.
